The Ballard Bulbasaur and Grants Pass Grotle faced off about a year ago for the first time. Two of the six founding members, these teams ended season 1.1 in 5th and 6th place respectively. Rival Avery took on the challenge of improving his skills, but much like Gary Oak, has fallen short in all 4 seasons. Hiker Alex on the other hand has been away from the league for that entire time, traveling America supporting his wife through school. While noble, Hiker Alex’s journey did not prepare him for the beatdown that Rival Avery had in store for him this week.
A 3-1 win against a friendly guy like Alex shouldn’t bring a smile to your face, but Rival Avery celebrated the entire night like he had won the Championship. We can sit around and write complaints against the League Rival all day, but it doesn’t take away that he is winning this season. Only a few points behind the top teams, the Bulbasaur are firmly in 4th place and should have good positioning going into the playoffs. Their biggest challenge in the next two weeks will come in week 7 when they face Kenmore Air.
Rival Avery may have been celebrating his victory, but Hiker Alex should have been the one celebrating that he got his first game win of the season against one of the top ranked gyms. This small victory should be a spot of pride for a trainer that jumped off the couch like Joe Flacco and jumped back into the game. Hiker Alex has declined his extension option in favor of returning to retirement at the end of this season.
